3.4 million still to file self assessment returns as deadline approaches

24 Jan 2025

There are still 3.4 million self assessment taxpayers who are yet to file their tax return for 2023/24 with the deadline fast approaching, according to HMRC.

The tax authority is warning these taxpayers to file now or risk missing the 31 January deadline – and get an automatic £100 penalty.

More than 8.6 million taxpayers have already filed their self assessment tax return, HMRC added.

HMRC says those yet to file can find support and guidance on GOV.UK, including live webinars, video tutorials and plenty of online help sheets.

It is also highlighting the ability to pay via the HMRC app. It says that nearly 360,000 taxpayers have paid their self assessment tax bill via the app since 6 April 2024, totalling more than £605 million.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Director General for Customer Services, said: 'Time is running out for the millions still to file their self assessment tax return by 31 January. Help and support is available for those who have not yet started their return.'
